Boost career by joining association

Professionals can gain most from relationship by helping in program, membership committees.- By Jim Pawlak

A reader asks, "What's the best way to stay current on what's going on in an industry and my profession?" The best way combines active membership in a professional association with reading trade magazines.

Note the word "active" -- that means participating in events, volunteering for a committee and making and maintaining contact with members beyond the event calendar. As for the trade magazines, their information provides conversation starters. Professional association membership also can open doors to your next career opportunity because you're developing relationships with decision makers.

There are two types of associations: the first revolves around an industry, the second around a profession. Industry-related associations have a more diverse base of members than career-related associations.

At a meeting of the National Women's Automotive Alliance, you'd find accounting, engineering, finance, human resources, legal, manufacturing, management, public relations, purchasing, sales, etc. represented. Profession-related associations have a more diversified base of industries represented. At a meeting of the American Marketing Association, you'd rub elbows with marketing people from a number of industries.

From the career opportunity aspect, industry associations can be likened to the "same church, different pews" situation. Conversely, profession-related associations can be described as "different churches, same pew."

So what kind should you join? You need both types of information to manage your career and a broad contact base to maximize its opportunities.

Once you do join, it's time to volunteer for a committee. My committee preferences have been program and membership, in that order. Program committee members locate speakers for the monthly events. This is an ideal way to contact the executives you need to know. If you choose the membership committee, you generally won't be aiming quite as high on the organizational ladder for your contacts, as you did for speakers.

To locate an association, check the Internet using "association" as a keyword. Going to an association Web site will tell you all about it. There's also "The Encyclopedia of Associations" in your library.
